August 5-6, Thursday-Friday

Thursday, August 5
We’re were off on the bus again this morning headed to Malmo. We’re getting very close to Denmark (which I’m excited about)! Malmo is just 40 minutes across the water from Copenhagen. On the way today we stopped at a church called St. Peter’s, done by Sigurd Lewerentz (he’s done a lot of buildings if you haven’t caught on by now). This building is one of the reasons some people wanted to come on the trip! There are a few key features that are the standout points for the building. I sketched both of them today. One is the roof support structure (column with cantilevered beam) and the other is a water feature with a cutout in the floor. The water drips every once in a while and it resonates throughout the church. He also does some interesting things with the floor around it. It was pretty cool.

Our hostel in Malmo is great! It’s clean, spacious and cute! They even have free knitting in the lobby (people can sit and knit, then leave it for the next person to continue).

After getting settled, Jen and Peter took us for a walk through Malmo out to the new development of the ship building harbor. In the 90s the ship building industry declined, which created an opportunity to develop their harbor in a new way. They decided to develop a “green” harbor, and it was a first of it’s kind. They even had an expo. It’s a great place, and apparently people who live there are very pleased. The park spaces are amazing and very playful.

Today was a three museum day. This may sound odd, but luckily they weren’t all good museums. I would have been exhausted if I had been entranced by them all! We began the day in Lund, a city just outside Malmo. It was a cute place with a really old cathedral, and an art gallery done by Klas Ansheim, a famous local architect. It was a fun, leisurely morning which was well invited. Then we moved on to the Malmo Art Gallery and the Modern Museum (extension from Stockholm). Both were okay, but I faded quickly.

I can’t believe I am leaving Sweden and I’m on to my final destination before home!
