August 2, Monday

Today has been a long day, but an awesome one! We got to see another building that was on my ‘top buildings to see’ list. We had to get up early to get on the road for our 2 hour drive to Hamar (which I remeber from the Olympics that were in Lillehamar) at 8:00 AM. The Hedmarks Museum by Sverre Fehn was our final destination! It was amazing…

The Hedmarks Museum is an archaeological site and ruins, turned in to a museum. The most amazing part of this building is that Fehn didn’t alter or surround the remains, he just built on top of them. So, the ground plane is unaltered with columns elevating the structure above it. It’s really mind blowing in to see how he creates these moments where old and new come together. It was a great trip and really worth the drive!

We ate lunch on the bus to conserve time today. Once we got back to Oslo, we went to see St. Hallvard’s Church and Cloister. The most interesting part of this building is the inverted dome shape covering the nave. We were all pretty drained from our exciting morning, so we left the church to get refueled.

A group of us went to Ethiopian and had a great meal, and then moved on to our last destination of the day (it’s 7:00 PM). We walked down to the harbor where the Oslo Opera House (by Snohetta) sits. It was another amazing building to see. It’s hard to explain the feeling you get sometimes when something just feels good and right. This building is amazing. It’s architecture that is beautiful, playful and practical all at the same time. The exterior of the building folds up from the water and creates a park for anyone to enjoy (you can literally walk up the roof). The whole project just made me feel special by being there, I don’t know what it was.

It was a great way to finish the day, and it reminded me of what amazing pieces of work I’m seeing on this trip and how valuable these experiences are.
